5GMeta: creating value from data for the communityAt the end of March, in Turin, LIFTT opened a space-time window on the future of automotive, thanks to the sponsorship of a meeting between the main players of innovation in the automotive field (VTM) preceded by an ad hoc competition on the theme 5GMeta.
Cars have long been computers on wheels, and this, in the era of hyperconnectivity, generates a series of consequences and possibilities still partly unknown: for example, cars, but also public transport and commercial vehicles, thanks to sensors generate huge volumes of real-time data on driving dynamics, the environment and the behavior of the driver and passengers.
With connected and automated mobility applications getting faster and faster, thanks to the 5G network, the data captured by vehicles becomes essential not only for the automotive industry, but also for new players such as small and medium enterprises and innovative startups, creating a true smart-mobility eco-system.
The European platform 5GMeta, by providing data in a configurable and open-source way, aims to facilitate the development of innovative products and services through information acquired from vehicles, in circulation or parked. The ultimate goal is to create an interoperable automotive ecosystem, which becomes strategic not only to reduce costs, but also to ensure greater safety and security for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians.
The international competition among young researchersThis was the starting point for the first “Hackathon” for application solutions of the 5GMeta platform, organized by LIFTT under the guidance of Project Manager Pierluigi Freni, with the support of Fondazione LINKS, and hosted in the beautiful spaces of Combo Torino.
During the Hackathon, which took place on March 29, the participants – most of them under 30 years old – worked in teams and faced three challenges. The first one concerned road safety, the second one vehicle mobility and the last one focused on services for individuals. The participants – from different countries – developed ideas and ‘business cases’ over a period of 24 hours that were evaluated by a qualified jury.
These are the three winning (and sustainable) ideas awarded at the first Hackathon on 5G connections: #GGGG, which proposed a platform to collect and cross-reference relevant data from cars in case of a road accident, #PoliDropper which imagined an in-vehicle camera able to predict in advance a potential driver’s sleepiness and, finally, #Ganesh’s idea of connected sensors -on the road and worn by operators- to optimize the deployment of emergency vehicles in rural areas. The VTM – Vehicle and Transport Innovation MeetingThe final award ceremony took place during the VTM opening ceremony at OGR.
The VTM is an international business convention on the skills, innovations and major issues that are impacting the automotive sector and it is no coincidence that it was held in Turin, which has become the capital of experimentation of connected and autonomous vehicles.
The event, which took place on March 30 and 31, was sponsored by LIFTT, promoted by Regione Piemonte and organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Turin – host sponsor of the initiative, in collaboration with Ceipiemonte.
25 countries were represented and more than 300 companies gathered in Turin: a really important moment to discuss and plan the future of the national automotive, and for LIFTT also the opportunity to meet buyers and decision makers, evaluate business projects with great potential and interact on the most important issues on the agenda in terms of innovation applied to transport and mobility.
The hot topics have obviously concerned the electrification of vehicles and batteries, but also hydrogen and other innovative propulsion systems, software defined vehicles, ADAS systems and autonomous driving, connectivity and big data, micro-mobility and new mobility models.
During the opening ceremony of VTM, Dario Peirone and Giovanni Tesoriere signed the partnership agreement between Ceipiemonte and LIFTT, which will see us work side by side in supporting the development of the Piedmont area.
